Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, S.T.E.P.S., Inc. was founded in 1991 by a group of professionals in education, mental health, and organizational development. The founders all shared a strong interest in using outdoor activities to enhance and support the work they were doing in more traditional settings.
S.T.E.P.S. has taken a leading role in developing adventure challenge programs for agencies and organizations throughout southeastern Michigan and metropolitan Detroit.
In addition to on-site programming
and consulting, the company currently has management
partnerships with a variety of agencies, including the
Joe Dumars'
Team and Leadership Center, a partnership
with the Joe
Dumars' Fieldhouse in Shelby Township, MI and Detroit,
MI; Camp
Lakeland in Franklinville, NY;
and other camps in southeastern Michigan. For a current

In conjunction
with its challenge course activities, S.T.E.P.S.
provides frequent training
opportunities for teachers and
other professionals who wish to incorporate the techniques
of adventure challenge programming into their work.
In recent years, S.T.E.P.S.
has expanded it scope of business and moved beyond
the Midwest, taking a lead in developing adventure
challenge programs. Partnering with builder John Walker
and
Bonsai Design,
S.T.E.P.S. is focused on aiding schools, camps, and other
agencies in developing educational programs that will endure
and prosper. In addition to providing ropes
course construction and inspection services, S.T.E.P.S. can also provide web
design services, production of promotional materials, creation
of program standards and guidelines, curriculum design,
and operation management tools.
