School Outreach Programs in Michigan
We are happy to announce our
new Outreach Program, which will allow us to bring high
quality programs directly to your school. Our skilled
facilitators are prepared to provide a wide range of
programs, including team-building activities and
nature-based science classes. We can customize these
offerings to support a variety of curricular goals, and we
can tailor the activities to meet the special needs of
individual classrooms.
Adventures in Teamwork
Portable
versions of our Group Initiatives Course elements at
Tamarack enable us to provide team-building programs inside
the school building or out on the playground.
This program is an excellent
way to help first-time participants form a stronger sense of
community and develop the skills necessary for effective
collaboration and cooperative learning. It can also serve as
valuable follow-up for students who have already been to
the Joe Dumars' Team
and Leadership Center or one of our outdoor courses.
A variety of outcomes can be
achieved in these programs including greater respect for
diversity, improved communication, better problem-solving,
and a willingness to accept responsibility for individual
and group success.
Programs can be run as stand
alone sessions or be integrated with current work in
progress in the classroom. Activities can be designed to
highlight lessons and add excitement to math, science, and
reading curriculums.
Science and Nature
Bring
some of nature inside! Our Science and Nature Outreach
Program allows students to take a close-up, hands-on
approach to a number of subjects. Here is a sampling of what
we can offer.
Living Science
Presentations: Our menagerie of live snakes,
lizards, raptors, and small mammals will take to the road
for visits to the classroom, where students will be able to
handle them and learn more about their characteristics and
habits in the natural world.
Outdoor Skills: The
subjects of these classes range from compass basics to the
rudiments of wilderness survival, allowing students to gain
practical skills and useful knowledge.
Birds
of Prey: This class includes a slide show, live
birds, and the opportunity to examine and learn from a
collection of bones and owl pellets.
Native American Lore:
Students explore the people of the three fires and their
culture. Active games and storytelling lend excitement and
become educational tools in learning about "the ways of the
people".
Scheduling and Fees
We will normally schedule
programs in sessions 45 to 90 minutes long. More than one
classroom may be served in succession. Classes from the
Science, Nature, and Outdoor Skills curriculum may be
offered in standalone sessions or in combination with the
Adventures in Teamwork program.
Fees are comparable to those in
effect at our outdoor sites and will vary according to the nature and
length of the program chosen and the number of classrooms
served.

interested in the Adventure Challenge option may wish to
