Group Initiatives and
Adventure Games
Basic Facilitation Skills (2-3 days)
An introduction to leading adventure
challenge games, warm-ups, and low-risk initiative problems.
Hands on experience and practice in framing tasks, leading
discussions, and managing safety.
Advanced Facilitation Skills (2 days)
For those who have mastered skills covered
in the basic course. Hands-on experience and practice in
leading higher risk initiative activities. Workshop sessions
on sequencing, time management, behavior management, and
tailoring activities to specific populations.
High Ropes and Climbing Structure
Basic Facilitation Skills (2 days)
A thorough introduction to technical skills
and standards. In addition to actual time spent on the
course elements, instructional sessions will address safety
systems and procedures, equipment, knots, ground anchors,
belays, and course rescue.
Advanced Facilitation Skills (2 days)
For those who have mastered skills and
information covered in the basic course. Topics will include
course inspection and basic repair, safety monitoring, tone
setting, assisting the transference of learning, time
management, coaching, and addressing special needs of
individuals.
S.T.E.P.S. Staff Training (3 days)
Intended for currently employed, new, and
prospective staff. Training groups will be divided
according to experience level. We are currently
accepting applications for Challenge Course Facilitators.

Refresher Training (2 days)
Open to those who have completed a
S.T.E.P.S. training or workshop, two days or more in length, in the past. Join us
for an opportunity to meet other teachers and professionals
who are incorporating adventure challenge into their
classrooms and programs; review activities and refresh
skills covered during your original training; learn new
tricks and techniques to more effectively work with groups,
frame activities, manage risk, and lead discussions; and
experience one of our three high ropes courses. Come
prepared to have fun and be outside for most of the day,
regardless of weather. Lunch will be made available in
the camp dining hall for $5/day. If you are interested
in the lunch option, we must know in advance when you call
in to RSVP.
Challenge Course Technical Training for Camp Programs
Designed for camp staff who will be leading
or supervising high adventure and challenge course
activities during the summer. Update or learn the skills
necessary to safely operate and manage group initiative,
low, and high courses. The five-day training will
begin from the ground up, building on the basics of group
initiative and low element activities and culminating in the
development of technical skills and operations standards
required for the safe management of static and dynamic high
ropes courses and climbing structures. Challenge
course site management, risk management, program standards,
and staff development and supervision will be emphasized
throughout.
